Read Bill Brown''s Bio of Community Service

The Annual Town Dinner, hosted by the Haddonfield Civic Association (HCA), is a great tradition in our town. It is a beautiful evening filled with wonderful people and a delightful theme. It honors Haddonfield citizens or organization who display uncommon leadership, intending to recognize those who have unselfishly inspired others and encouraged broader participation in the activities of the Haddonfield community with the Alfred E. Driscoll Community Service Award. In addition, the dinner recognizes three Haddonfield Memorial High School (HMHS) seniors with HCA scholarships for the Bradshaw Literary Award, the Quanci Visual Arts Award, and the Kaufmann Performing Arts Award, which recognizes a student’s participation in the performing arts.

On behalf of the Haddonfield Civic Association, we are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2024-2025 Alfred E. Driscoll Community Service Award will be presented to Bill Brown. The Board of Governors is very impressed with Bill’s deep commitment to our community and involvement in so many organizations and campaigns as a volunteer. The Driscoll Award was created to recognize the role models in our community with the hope that others will be inspired to do the same. Bill Brown is the perfect example of the ‘uncommon’ volunteer the Driscoll Award seeks to honor.

Being nominated for the Alfred E. Driscoll Community Service award is an outstanding town achievement. It recognizes individuals or organizations that have made a lasting, positive impact on our town in a volunteer capacity. Bill’s deep connection to our town is reflected in his volunteer service and the organizations he has served:

Bill has always been involved in the community. Even in High School his bio read “to list Bill’s activities would be like writing a book!” After High School he started a six-year apprenticeship for tool and die-making. But, this was interrupted by the Korean War and Bill joined the Army and served at Fort Jackson, Fort Benning for two years. Just three years later he married his wife Joan and they have lived happily in the same Haddonfield home for 56 years where they raised three boys who attended our schools. She and Bill also hosted Japanese Guests for 35 years. Bill has visited Japan 14 times and produced a 50th Anniversary Documentary for the Japanese Community of Seabrook NJ, which aired nationally. After being married for 61 years, Bill’s partner Joan passed away in 2021. Up until last year, Bill served as the president of Haddonfield’s Lion Club and to this day Bill remains active in serving many Haddonfield organizations. Bill’s spirit to serve our community is admirable and it is our honor to present him with the 2024 Alfred E. Driscoll Community Service Award.
